Ever wonder...?

National: In light of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, we are starting to acknowledge the dangers of America's dependence on oil, and this did not escape the notice of President Obama himself. With a strong, green presence in the White House, maybe America will finally move in the green direction like our European counter-parts.

National: From the "Mountaintop Mining Consequences" study, we learn more in depth about the negative effects mountaintop mining (MTM) has on the environment. This mining process involves cutting down trees on the desired mountaintop and blasting off the peak to mine the coal underneath it. Margaret Palmer of the University of Maryland, leader of the study, and her colleagues gathered that MTM leads to the "downstream flooding and toxic levels of selenium" into nearby streams, "that the blast dust can cause respiratory problems, and that reclaiming the mined areas by planting grass doesn't appear to work." Palmer hopes that, through this study, she can show "policymakers [that is, those who authorize MTM sites] a clear rundown of the potential consequences." {Source: Popular Science magazine, August 2010 edition}

International: Gel pens made from recycled water bottles can be purchased in the average office supply store. Imagine my surprise and delight to find these pens near the cash register of my favorite Staples while I was on line to purchase pens! I bought two packs. The pens are reliable, their gel dries quickly (minimum smudging!), and they're made from recylced material! They are called B2Ps (Bottle to Pen), and I recommend that everyone buy them.

International: Denmark now has commonly used trash incinerators that, as their name suggests, burn trash so that it can be used for energy. Past incinerators have done similar, but they were too costly, emitted too many greenhouse gases, and did not produce enough usable energy. Now, Danish trash is efficiently removed and recycled as energy that heats and lights nearby homes. One concern that the U.S. has about these incinerators is that they are too costly, especially because of the recession. But, the economies of Denmark and Germany (also using the incinerator) have improved significantly since the wide-spread use of these incinerators. They cut down on the cost of gas and electricity AND remove harmful trash and recyclables while containing the noxious methane produced by many previous incinerators. With all the benefits, why shouldn't the United States develop this program as well?

International: According to the May/June 2010 issue of Science Illustrated, scientists and politicians around the world are discussing ways to "geo-engineer" planet Earth. Geo-engineering is a controversial method in which drastic climate control measures are taken to change the temperature worldwide. You can expect to see ideas like biochar burial, subterranean carbon dioxide storage, white rooftop and road construction, and foil-wrapped glaciers coming soon. Check out more of these geo-engineering methods and how much they'll impact the world (and our wallets) http://scienceillustrated.com/enewsletter.php.
